Well it’s happened again , another great adventure . Go See Touring invited me to take a group of friends to the Norfolk Island Country Music Festival and we had a ball . The island is only very small 8k’s x 3k’s ( roughly) but what a paradise , the people , the history, the scenery , the food , just switch off the pace , relax and enjoy . We flew Air New Zealand from Sydney which takes about 2 hours , or less with a tail wind as we found out . Monday night was the meet and greet night with country music artists from Australia and New Zealand . Our Australian performers were head lined by one of the best singer / songwriters we have in OZ Graeme Connors , and he wowed the audience on the Australian show case night . Also appearing was Tamara Stewart , Carter Edwards , Nathaniel O’Brien , a fabulous backing band called the “Smoking Crawdads” and of course me . The New Zealand Show case night was headlined by Suzanne Prentice , she is wonderful .
After each concert night , the young at heart could kick up their heels on the dance floor .The Norfolk Island R S L Club which was just opposite our accommodation had entertainment on each afternoon and evening , so it was a very popular place to meet.
Most days we had morning discovery trips around the Island as there is plenty of history especially during the convict days . Several people in my group traced relations back in time to the convict days , good and bad , I was too scared to look just in case the Vincent name came up , I think there is a few skeletons in the cupboard . Most afternoons we could all relax , take a walk , shop and just take in the easy going nature of the Island , the scenery is just awesome .
The convict night is a must when you go to Norfolk Island and I know all of my crew had a wonderful night , plenty of fun and games , especially passing the hat , ball and chain and the rolling pin , I’ll leave the rest to your imagination . The cast were wonderful “Private Parts”, “Private Lessons” and the Commandant kept the crowd in stitches with their antics and stories .
Sunday night was our farewell party night and quite a few people featured with a song or a joke . Frank , our rock and roll dancer from Ballarat sang “We are Australian” and brought the house down , not only could he sing but he can dance . My good friend and fellow musician from Gundowering Thelma Reid played the piano for the Barn Dance and Pride Erin . Shirley , Lorraine and Monica did their line dance to “Acky Breaky Heart”, Monica was the life of the party , just a wonderful lady . Barb graced us with a couple of jokes , clean of course , well a little muddy ! , and Wendy had us in fits with her game . Brian from Yarram told us all about the boy’s fishing trip when Stewie almost lost his teeth , it was hilarious , Stewie definitely got the 3 votes that day . Apparently the seas were a little rough but they caught plenty of fish. Gigi from GO See Touring
was there along with CEO Michael Prentice and both expressed their thanks to all . Gigi was a wonderful help to us all . The staff at Pine tree Tours were excellent .
Monday morning we all gave the plastic money a bit of a work out with duty free shopping and it was time to fly back to Australia .
As with our trip to New Zealand 2010 , Vietnam 2011 and now Norfolk we all made some wonderful new friendships and to me that is the best part , just to see people laughing and having fun together , good medicine . I was very lucky to have my Mother and Father come along with me as well , and they had a wonderful time and everyone made them feel very welcome .
2013 promises to be a big year so I hope you can join me on at least one of the exciting holidays Go See Touring has planned to the 20th Norfolk Island Country Music Festival In May or to England , Scotland , Wales and Ireland , July / August , this one promises to be a beauty .
